CELEBREX

Celebrex (celecoxib) is a popular drug used for pain relief. Celebrex, manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, is in the same class of drugs as Vioxx and Bextra.

Celebrex is part of a new class of NSAIDs, the COS-2 selective drugs. This class of drugs was created to decrease stomach and GI problems by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme which is responsible for producing the prostaglandins that create pain, inflamation, and act as a natural anti-coagulant.

Unfortunately by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme without inhibiting the COX-1 enzyme, create an imbalance that can lead to adverse cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. While Celebrex has not been pulled from the market, the FDA has required changes to its warning label to include the increased risks of heart attacks and strokes.
